Student Auxiliary Sustainability Data Analyst Intern

Position Description

The UMass Auxiliary Sustainability department is in the midst of several exciting projects and continuously working to expand and improve our efforts. An important component of this work is related to our campus food systems. The Student Auxiliary Sustainability Data Analyst supports new and existing projects and works to leverage data to promote and enhance programs around local and sustainable procurement, waste reduction, low carbon dining, and engagement with the campus community. 

The Student Auxiliary Sustainability Data Analyst works closely with the UMass Auxiliary Director of Sustainability and Sustainability Manager to support the Auxiliary Sustainability Department goals. The vision for this role is to leverage data-driven insights to enhance sustainability within our university dining program, fostering a greener and more engaged campus community. 

Weekly Structure: The Data Analyst Intern will meet weekly with the Director of Sustainability and Sustainability Manager to discuss responsibilities and projects. This is a hybrid position. 

Responsibilities: 

The Auxiliary Sustainability Data Analysis Intern will focus on analyzing data related to local and sustainable procurement, local vendors, waste reduction, low carbon dining, and survey results. They will support improvements to our local and sustainable procurement tracking system and its integration with Tableau. The role also includes helping maintain ongoing data collection projects, including but not limited to local procurement, plastic procurement, and waste management. Additional duties include participating in data collection activities - such as tabling sessions - and supporting other dining sustainability projects as needed. Primary tasks include, but are not limited to: 

Data Analysis & Visualization 

- Data Analysis: Analyze data related to local and sustainable food procurement, vendor performance, waste management, low carbon dining initiatives, and customer surveys to identify trends, opportunities, and areas for improvement. 
- Data Visualization: Create visualizations to support decision-making and effectively communicate sustainability insights using tools like Tableau and Power BI. 
- Summary Reporting: Creating reports that synthesize data analysis and articulates findings for a lay audience. 

System Enhancement 

- Local and Sustainable Procurement Tracking: Support enhancements to our procurement tracking system to ensure accurate and comprehensive data collection and reporting. This includes working with our menu management system (FoodPro), Excel, and Tableau 
- Tableau & PowerBI: Identify additional ways to apply Tableau and PowerBI to visualize and interpret data across other sustainability initiatives 

Support for Auxiliary Sustainability Projects 

- Data Collection: Assist with data collection during tabling sessions across campus. Help design and administer surveys to gather information on customer awareness and preferences. 
- Project Assistance: Support various dining sustainability projects as needed to advance overall sustainability goals. 
- Collaboration: Work closely with team members to share insights, provide data support, and contribute to project planning and execution. 
- Communication: Collaborate with fellow Sustainability Interns to turn data findings into clear, easy-to-understand communication points.

Wage
The Student Auxiliary Sustainability Data Analyst works 10-15 hours per week at a rate of $17.00-20.00/hour based on experience.
Location
This is a hybrid position, with a combination of remote work and on-campus responsibilities.
